How to become a Freight Broker Agent?
Complete these steps in this order:
FYI If you do this own your own it will be free. Some places charge to complete these steps!
1. Think of a name for your business. ( your business name should have trucking and logistics in there somewhere. Ex: your name trucking, your name express, your name logistics etc..)
2. Apply for a free EIN number on the IRS website. https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/apply-for-an-employer-identification-number-ein-online
3. Download the free W9 form from the IRS website. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf
4. Apply for your business entity, LLC, INC, Partnership etc... https://www.incfile.com/ will be a great place to get this setup, you'll enter your information and they will file the paperwork for you. This is a great way to know that your business entity is filed the correct way, if you happen to make a mistake while doing it yourself, the corrections will cost you, you want to keep your overhead low. It will take one week or less to receive your articles of Incorporation.
5. Take your articles of Incorporation, your completed W9 and your EIN paperwork to a bank and open up a business checking account.
6. Your business is now setup and you can become a contractor to a brokerage as a freight broker agent.
